Top Vegas Tricks and Secrets #2

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

I know, I know, Vegas has tons of amazing restaurants. So, why do we go to Mon Ami Gabi for breakfast every single time we are there?

mon ami

Two reasons. First, the food is simply amazing. Second, sitting on the patio across from the Bellagio fountains puts you right in the middle of the strip. Even at breakfast, the people watching cannot be beat.

This trip we were with a group and worried (a bit) that we would not get our Mon Ami Gabi fix. Not to worry, our friends loved it too! So much, in fact, that we went every single day! We recommend the bloody mary bar, anything on the menu and suggest ordering a side of the Banana Foster Pancakes (to share with the table).

Chain Restaurants Everywhere! Vegas 2011

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

As you well know, Vegas is possibly my favorite destination, especially during the winter months. It is a time to get away from the harsh cold and snow and have some fun! D and I joined my parents for a four day excursion this January, and while we were thrilled to get away there were two major problems with the trip.

TE beer

Problem #1-We totally lost! This was, by far, our worst gambling excursion ever! Neither of us could win at any point on the trip. It got so bad at one point that my mom was trying to give me money. As if this was not enough…

Problem #2- It seems all of the Vegas restaurants, even those with big name chef/owners, are nothing more than chain restaurants in disguise.

Our first experience with this was Nobhill Tavern located in the MGM. This is a Michael Mina restaurant, and while it was the best of the big name chef restaurants, it still did not make me say WOW. I guess I was a bit cranky because I had heard so much about the Lobster Pot Pie. However, when I ordered it, I was informed that it was $85. Ok…I am a foodie, but I was a bit shocked by this price tag, and ended up opting for the fresh fish option, good, but I could have had comparable at home.

Our next attempt was Lagasse’s Stadium located in the Palazzo. This is Emeril’s version of the sports bar. And, while I was definitely impressed with the decor, especially the stadium seating section, the food was nothing more than slightly elevated bar food. This is a big disappointment because I have been a fan of Emeril’s New Orleans Restaurant for a long time.

The next morning we finally experienced a the meal and service we had been waiting for at Simon located in the Palms Place. I had called the night before because we wanted to watch a basketball game and, with the time difference, the game was in the morning. They were very pleasant on the phone and we showed up the staff was so excited. “We have been waiting for you!” and we were escorted to the perfect table with a great view of the television with our game already on. The breakfast was outstanding and we will be visiting for their brunch on our next trip.

Our final restaurant on the trip was Todd English’s Pub located in Aria. Again, I am a huge fan of Todd English, visiting his other restaurants in Boston and Vegas, but this, again, felt more like an upscale chain. (On a positive note, the beer selection was amazing.) The food was simply good bar food.

So, you may say that I got exactly what I ask for…I guess I didn’t expect Emeril to be back there cooking for me himself…But, I did expect an excellent meal. I have resolved to find local establishments on my next visit!

verhBecause we fly to Vegas from the midwest, out internal clocks are completely out of whack and we  want to eat at odd times. This often makes Brunch our perfect Vegas meal. Since we were staying at the Four Seasons, we decided to try Verhandah. The open, sunny seating area and the fresh juice of the day (watermelon-berry) were the perfect welcome.

verh2There were three buffet sections. The first held fruit, yogurt and a variety of pastries. These were often mixed in delicious miniature concoctions that enabled you to sample several. one example was yogurt, granola and black berries.

verh3The second section included 12 or more hot items including eggs Benedict, french toast, hash browns, etc. All items were of the highest quality and delicious. One favorite were the cheese blintzes-crepes wrapped around a cream and cottage cheese mix with fresh berry sauce. The final section was the best omelet bar I have ever seen. It included no less that 20 fillings and sauces.

One of our absolute favorite spots in Vegas is the Hard Rock Hotel. The loud rock music and young crowd create a fun, energy filled atmosphere. So on our first Saturday in Vegas we went with a group of friends. A quick walk around revealed that the tables were pretty full and we were pretty hungry so we decided to try Mr Luckys.

One fun secret is to ask the server for the secret special (it helps and adds drama if you wink here). What you get is the Steak and Shrimp an 8-ounce flat iron steak, three jumbo shrimp, salad, and garlic mashed potatoes, all for  $7.77. The entire group was thrilled with the decent sized portions and the amazing price. The entire table cleaned their plates and vowed to come back again.

This is one of our favorite stops in Vegas because of the homey old-world feel. The location dates back to the rack pack days and is adorned with the photos to prove it. The no nonsense staff seats you and points out the menu on the wall.

Each meal includes soup or salad, garlic bread, all the wine you can drink (red or white) and cappuccino. We went with my parents, I selected the chicken pizzaiola ($26.95) which was a large breaded chicken breast smothered with sauce and mushrooms. It was rich with a kick. It was served with a side of pasta and spinach. D chose the Chicken Parmesan ($26.95), which was similar to the pizzailoa without the mushrooms or the kick, and it was smothered in mozzarella. My parents selected the spaghetti with meat sauce ($20.95) and asked to split which was an additional $10 and included all of the accompaniments of the other dinners. The split was well worth it. They both enjoyed the dish and cleaned their plates. The servers are very aware of the menu and the needs of the customers. This was evidenced with little things like bringing an extra bowl of sauce for my parents.

The red wine was good, not fancy, you have to just go with the experience. The salad was iceberg with cheese and pepperoni, when asked what dressings were available the server replied “Italian” and starred at us. The garlic bread was crusty topped with read garlic and olive oil. To finish the cappuccino was more like hot chocolate but was the perfect end to the meal. We highly recommend this spot for the times in Vegas when you just want good food, a lot of it and no fluff.
