Atlanta in JULY? Yes, every time we shared this plan we were greeted with strange looks. But, D had a race there and we were visiting friends for the Fourth weekend, so why not? We stayed at the Ritz Carleton Buckhead due to its proximity to the start line and we were glad we did. In addition to being able to watch the start from the hotel room in my PJ’s, the service and the hotel it self were luxurious.

Luckily we had our friends as tour guides and were able to sample several local dining spots. The first was Leon’s Full Service a renovated gas station turned into a green, community driven restaurant and bar. The best part were the drinks, local brews and handmade cocktails down to the ice cubes. Mine was a cucumber concoction which fit my taste perfectly after a long travel day. We also loved the Pub Fries with a choice of two dipping sauces. I begged for three because I could not make up my mind: garlic aioli, goat cheese fondue, and spicy mango catsup. These were an excellent snack.

The second day we visited which was another converted gas station…a theme was developing here. Diesel Pizza and Pub was more casual and, again, the food did not disappoint. I opted for the meatball sub, which was definitely upgraded and flavorful.

Our pre race fancy meal was, you guessed it, a steakhouse. Rays located in a beautiful spot on the river delivered delicious steaks, shareable sides and a great wine selection.
