After much research about Berlin, we made two decisions that turned out to be brilliant. First, we decided to do a walking tour on the day we arrived. I had read that this keeps you moving and helps beat jet lag. The second decision was to hire Peter Degener as our guide. Peter met us at our hotel in the afternoon and asked us a few quick questions to assess our goals for the tour.

We then visited the train station where where we received an extremely valuable lesson about the subway, how to buy tickets and how to navigate the city. This lesson served us for the rest of the trip. We then proceeded to visit every historic landmark in Berlin. Peter was well prepared sharing photos of each site before and immediately after the war.

The best part of the experience was the ability to ask questions about history as well as modern Berlin. Peter was knowledgeable and informative. An added benefit were the visits to local pubs and restaurants. We had originally planned to tour for three hours and that stretched into nine! The tour was definitely a highlight of our trip to Berlin. Our only regret is that Peter also offers tours of his hometown, Potsdam and we did not have time to do that tour.
